FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE Blomqvist 2nd in class and 4th overall at Pikes PeakColorado Springs, Co, USA30/06/2002 -- After a trying week for the Mach 2 Racing team, Saturday’s running of the 80th annual Pikes Peak International Hillclimb saw Stig Blomqvist pilot their Ford RS200 Evolution to 4th place overall in a time of 11m 47s.
Blomqvist was forced to drive the RS200 for 8 miles of the 12-mile course without brakes after losing them before a section known as Glen Cove. The fact that Blomqvist persevered without any form of braking assistance only serves to illustrate his phenomenal driving ability, and makes the 4th placing even more remarkable.
Blomqvist commented that the RS200 had been performing well until losing its brakes, and that the tyre choice the team had made for the day was very well suited to the conditions of the challenging road that snakes its way to the summit of Pikes Peak, some 14110ft above sea level.
Earlier in the week the team missed qualifying after suffering mechanical problems during the second official practice session, the problems forcing them to have replacement components shipped from England. The team worked tirelessly to ensure the vehicle was ready for Saturday’s main event and were very pleased with the events final outcome.
Mach 2 Racing would like to extend their thanks to those who have supported them in their quest to claim the Pikes Peak title in 2002:
· Mountune Racing Engines (UK) · Arrow Pharmaceuticals · Garrett Turbochargers · Colin Blower Motorsport (UK) · Ford Motor Company · Compaq · Phil Long Ford · MW Freight (UK) · Craig Brooks Racing Engines · Les Wagner Fabrication
Mach 2 Racing look forward to continuing their relationship with all of those people and companies who have made their 2002 campaign possible, and are also enthusiastic about returning to mount a fresh challenge in 2003. |
