UPDATE FROM THE TEAM - After the amazing efforts of the team technicians
over the past 24 hours, the Mach 2 Racing team was granted a special
dispensation to race having not formally qualified on Thursday, by Phil Layton
the PPIHC Race Director. The team were one of the centres of attraction to race
goers on race day and the clash between long time Swedish rivals Stig Blomqvist
and Per Eklund was eagerly awaited by all.
As Stig and the Mach 2 Racing RS200 drew up to the line, no-one was expecting
the absolutely spectacular start that Stig would make. With close to 850 BHP on
tap, Stig dropped the clutch and RS200 rocketed away from the line in the most
amazing display of driving seen on the day. The large crowd at the start line
and along the first few corners roared their approval.
Unknown however at the time both to the team and crowd, whilst Stig had posted
an amazing quick first quarter time, he had lost all brakes about one third into
the run. With 100 turns still to come, Stig had to use all the skills of an ex
world rally champion to keep the car on the road.
Despite brake problems that would have caused most racers to end their run, Stig
persevered and amazingly went through the line in a time of 11.47, 4th quickest
of the day. Whilst the team was disappointed that the brake failure had ruled
out a sub 10 minute run this year, Stig and the RS200 proved that the time was
definitely within their grasp for next year.
Team Manager, Alan Greenwood, would like to sincerely and publicly thank all his
hard working and dedicated race technicians, Geoff, WeeGee, Mark, Dave, Derek
and Moose and would also like to thank Craig Brooks and his team for their
invaluable assistance.
